21.12.07 - The ultimate in go-faster bits
Now back in the UK after signing a deal to go Top Fuel with Knut Söderquist in 2008, Derek Flynn of Eurodragster.com News sponsor Gold RV says that he still can't quite believe it.
We are all very excited at the prospect", says Derek. "After agreeing the deal with Knut, the grin is back and it just won't budge! In our race report from the UK National Finals we were so frustrated at not getting our five in the Top Methanol Dragster, and I said "Ah well bring on the clutch and few other go-faster goodies". When I wrote that, I didn't think that the go-faster goodies would include nitro and a Top Fuel Dragster, but thanks to a news item on Eurodragster they do now!
In just four years - although it seems like ten - my team have had to cope with so much. This will be our third class and fourth different car and our biggest challenge yet! I would like to thank all the Go Gold Crew for all their help, support and tireless efforts - without them none of this would have been possible. We are hoping to add to the team a few new members with Fuel experience, and I hope to be able to announce them soon.
Every year I say that "Next year will be another steep learning curve for the team and I", but I am sure that we shall rise to the challenge again and we just cannot wait to compete at the pinnacle of our sport. We shall approach next year one step at a time. First and foremost we have to get licenced, which is a tough task in its self, as we have to achieve two runs of 5.40 or better and at least one run in excess of 260 mph, both of which eclipse my previous bests. When we get licenced the next goal will be to qualify at an FIA event, which again is going to be no mean feat going by this year's TF performances. These I am sure will improve again in 2008, so we will probably have to run a very low five or probably a four to get in, mind-blowing!
I would like to thank Knut for his confidence in us and allowing us the opportunity to run in his latest Top Fuel Dragster. The car looks great and Knut assures us that it is capable of competing at this top level, let's hope it does not take us too long to long to learn how to do it! There are just so many people I would like to thank for helping us get to this point, so I will say a huge thanks to everyone who has helped us in, on and around the tracks to date - you know who you all are; especially the track crews at all the tracks we have raced, again without you guys and gals none of this would be possible. Thanks also to everyone in Top Methanol Dragster who have helped us this year; thanks to Andy Robinson for all the help and support, and last but by no means least thank you Tog and all at Eurodragster, your support of the sport and us racers is just fantastic (Thanks, you're welcome - Ed)!
I would also like to add, for anyone looking to get into drag racing: go to the Super Pro pits like I did five years ago. You could not wish to meet a nicer bunch of people, who will do almost anything to help you join the class, get you started, keep you running and ensure you have a really great time. Thanks guys. I am sure this is the same with most classes but once a Super Pro'er always a Super Pro'er! Finally a Merry Christmas to everyone and a fast and safe New Year to you all."
